Duchess Sophie in Bavaria (Sophie Charlotte Augustine; 23 February 1847 – 4 May 1897) was a granddaughter-in-law of King Louis Philippe of France, the favourite sister of Empress Elisabeth of Austria as well as one time fiancée of King Ludwig II of Bavaria.


Marriage[edit]

On 28 September 1868 Sophie Charlotte married Prince Ferdinand of Orléans, Duke of Alençon in Possenhofen, Bavaria. Prince Ferdinand was a son of Prince Louis of Orléans, Duke of Nemours and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (a first cousin o the UK's Queen Victoria). His father was a son of King Louis Philippe I of the French.


Issue[edit]

  1. Princess Louise of Orléans 19 Julie 1869 – 4 February 1952) married Prince Alfons of Bavaria and had issue.
  2. Prince Emmanuel of Orléans, Duke of Vendôme 18 January 1872 – 1 February 1931) married Princess Henriette of Belgium and had issue.
