Duke Max Joseph in Bavaria (Maximilian Joseph; 4 December 1808 – 15 November 1888) or simply called Max in Bavaria was a member of the Birkenfeld-Gelnhausen ` branch of the House of Wittelsbach. The Herzog Max Palais in Munich served as his city residence.

- Duke Wilhelm Karl in Bavaria (24 December 1832 – 13 February 1833) died young.
- Duchess Helene in Bavaria (4 April 1834 – 16 May 1890) married Maximilian Anton, Hereditary Prince of Thurn and Taxis and had issue.
- Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria (24 December 1837 – 10 September 1898) married Franz Joseph I of Austria and had issue.
- Duke Karl Theodor in Bavaria (9 August 1839 – 30 November 1909) married twice and had issue.
