Empress Maria Theresa (Maria Theresia Walburga Amalia Christina; 13 May 1717 – 29 November 1780) was a ruler of the Habsburg dominions from 1740 until her death in 1780, and the only woman to hold the position. She was the sovereign of Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bohemia, Transylvania, Mantua, Milan, Lodomeria and Galicia, the Austrian Netherlands, and Parma. By marriage, she was Duchess of Lorraine, Grand Duchess of Tuscany and Holy Roman Empress. Her marriage founded the House of Habsburg-Lorraine which ruled Austria till the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire then the Empire of Austria.
Marriage[edit]
On 12 February 1736, she married Francis III Stephen, Duke of Lorraine, later Grand Duke of Tuscany.

- Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor (13 March 1741–20 February 1790) married (1) Princess Isabella of Parma then (2) Princess Maria Josepha of Bavaria and had issue.
- Archduchess Maria Christina of Austria (13 May 1742–24 June 1798) married Prince Albert Casimir August of Saxony and had issue.
- Archduchess Maria Elisabeth of Austria (13 August 1743–22 September 1808) never married.
- Archduke Charles Joseph of Austria (1 February 1745–18 January 1761) never married.
- Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria ( 26 February 1746–9 June 1804) married Ferdinando I, Duke of Parma and had issue.
- Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor (5 May 1747–1 March 1792) married Infanta Maria Luisa of Spain and had issue.
