Frederick I (Friedrich I; 11 July 1657 – 25 February 1713) of the House of Hohenzollern, was (as Frederick III) Elector of Brandenburg (1688–1713) and Duke of Prussia in personal union (Brandenburg-Prussia). The latter function he upgraded to royalty, becoming the first King in Prussia in 1701.


First marriage[edit]

On 13 August 1679, he married Princess Elisabeth Henriette of Hesse-Kassel, daughter of William VI, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel and Hedwig Sophia of Brandenburg.


Issue[edit]

  1. Princess Luise Dorothea Sophie of Prussia (29 September 1680 – 23 December 1705) married Frederick, Hereditary Prince of Hesse-Kassel and died in childbirth.

On 8 October 1684, he married Princess Sophie Charlotte of Hanover

Issue[edit]

  1. Frederick August of Brandenburg (6 October 1685 – 31 January 1686) died in infancy.
  2. Frederick William I of Prussia (14 August 1688 – 31 May 1740) married Sophia Dorothea of HanoverPrincess Sophia Dorothea of Hanover and had issue.


Third marriage[edit]

On 28 November 1708, he married Princess Sophie Luise of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, daughter of Frederick, Duke of Mecklenburg-Grabow and Christine Wilhelmine of Hesse-Homburg. They had no issue.
