The House of Wettin, with over 1,000 years of family history, is one of the oldest documented families of the German high nobility, which is of historical importance for the state history of the current German federal states of Saxony, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Bavaria. The dynasty derives its name from Wettin Castle , located near Halle (Saale).
