His reign of 72 year and 110 days is the longest of any monarch of major countries in European history. He was succeeded by his 5 year-old great-grandson [[Louis XV of France|Louis XV]], but Louis' nephew and son-in-law [[Philippe II, Duke of Orléans|Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Orléans]] acted as [[regent]] till the young king reached his majority in 1723.
