Louis XIV of France (5 September 1638 - 1 September 1715), often called the Sun King (le Roi-Soleil), was a monarch o the House of Bourbon who ruled as King of France and Navarre from 1643 till his death. His reign of 72 year an 110 days is the longest of any monarch of major countries in European history. He was succeeded by his 5 year-old great-grandson Louis XV, but Louis' nephew and son-in-law Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Orléans acted as regent till the young king reached his majority in 1723.
