Margarita Teresa of Austria (12 July 1651 – 12 March 1673) was Holy Roman Empress by marriage to her uncle, Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I. A daughter of King Philip IV of Spain and the elder sister of Charles II. She featured in several paintings by Diego Velázquez. From birth she had the rank and title of Infanta of Spain but was also an Archduchess of Austria as a result of being a member of the House of Habsburg. The Empress was also a half-sister of Queen Marie Thérèse of France.
Marriage[edit]
She married Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor and on 5 December 1666, the solemn entry of the Infanta in Vienna took place and the official marriage taking place on 12 December. The union was planned in order to unite the rival branches of the House of Habsburg which ruled Spain as well as Austria and the Holy Roman Empire.
