Princess Teresa Teodora of Brazil (Boulogne-sur-Mer, 18 July 1919 — Estoril, 18 April 2011) was a Princess of Brazil and member of the House of Orléans-Braganza, the fifth and last daughter of Pedro de Alcântara, Prince of Grão-Pará, the firstborn son of the Isabel, Regent of Brazil, and his wife Countess Elisabeth Dobržensky de Dobrženicz, daughter of Jan Vaclav II, Count of Dobrženicz.

Biography[edit]

Princess Teresa Teodora, named Teresa Teodora Micaela Gabriela Rafaela Gonzaga de Orléans e Bragança Dobrzensky de Dobrzenicz Martorell y Calderó, as the younger daughter of Pedro de Alcântara, Prince of Grão-Pará was, on the paternal side, the son of Isabel, Regent of Brazil, the last living ruler of the Brazilian Empire, and the Prince Consort, Prince Gaston, Count of Eu.

She lived between Portugal, France and Brazil, having died of natural causes at 91 years of age, in her residence. On her 90th birthday, Teresa reunited her family in Estoril. The presumptive heir to the Portuguese throne, Duarte Pio, Duke of Braganza, son of the marriage of her sister Princess Maria Francisca of Brazil with Duarte Nuno, Duke of Braganza, dedicated a few words to him: "My aunt gave us throughout her life an example of courage and It has a life of dedication to the most needy" he declared on the occasion.

Her nephew, Duarte Pio, is the current held for the title of Duke of Braganza and therefore the head of the Royal House of Portugal, claiming titles, among others, King of Portugal.

Marriage and issue[edit]

On 7 October 1957, in Sintra, Portugal, she married Ernesto António Maria Martorell y Calderó (1921-1985), a wealthy Spanish businessman. From this marriage were born two daughters:

  • Elisabeth Martorel and Orléans-Bragança (b. 1959)
  • Núria Martorel and Orléans-Bragança (b.1960)
