Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg (Victoria Eugenie; 24 October 1887 – 15 April 1969) was Queen of Spain as the wife of King Alfonso XIII from their marriage on 31 May 1906 until 14 April 1931, when the Spanish Second Republic was proclaimed. A Hessian princess by birth, she was a member of the Battenberg family, a morganatic branch of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt. She was the youngest granddaughter of Queen Victoria.


Marriage[edit]

On 31 May 1906 Princess Victoria Eugenie married King Alfonso XIII of Spain, son of the late King Alfonso XII and Archduchess Maria Christina of Austria.

  1. Infante Alfonso of Spain, Prince of Asturias (10 May 1907 – 6 September 1938) married twice but had no issue.
  2. Infante Jaime, Duke of Segovia (23 June 1908 – 20 March 1975) married twice and had issue.
  3. Infanta Beatriz of Spain (22 June 1909 – 22 November 2002) married Alessandro Torlonia, 5th Prince of Civitella-Cesi and had issue.
  4. Infante Fernando of Spain (21 May 1910) stillborn.
  5. Infanta María Cristina of Spain (12 December 1911 – 23 December 1996) married Enrico Marone-Cinzano, 1st Count Marone and had issue.
  6. Infante Juan of Spain, Count of Barcelona (20 June 1913 – 1 April 1993) married Princess María de las Mercedes of the Two Sicilies and had issue.
  7. Infante Gonzalo of Spain (24 October 1914 – 13 August 1934) died young.
